Bastille Day

The French mark Bastille Day with parades, aeronautic stunts and the pardoning of petty offenders, but here in Britain we can celebrate our Gallic neighbours by sampling the best that Mayfair and Belgravia have to offer in French cuisine, fashion and all manner of objets de luxe.

Patisserie Valerie

Food and drink

Mayfair and Belgravia are replete with fine French food. Look no further than the Berkeley, where legendary French chef Pierre Koffmann chose to open his eagerly awaited London restaurant featuring hearty fare inspired by his Gascony childhood.

In Belgravia, Roussillon has an haute cuisine treat for vegetarians: its seven-course Menu Légumes consists entirely of vegetables and fruit. Carnivores are also catered for, with delectable dishes ranging from turbot to duck.

Those with a sweet tooth shouldn’t miss Pierre Hermé, the eponymous shop of the man whom Vogue calls the "Picasso of pastry". His London boutique opened in September 2010 and offers sublime treats, from sea salt and caramel macarons to passionfruit and strawberry tarts. Patisserie Valerie, which has had a presence in London since 1926, is another firm favourite among fans of les gâteaux.

Wash it all down with a glass of Bordeaux or a flute of crisp Champagne from Jeroboams or Majestic.

Fashion and beauty

No fashionista’s life would be complete without a stop at Christian Louboutin – his red-soled stilettos are among the fashion world’s most coveted shoes. And French label Azzarro has dressed stars from Brigitte Bardot to Sharon Stone. If you’re looking for the perfect little black dress, this is the place to go.

Once you have that perfect dress, all you need is a scent to match. Les Senteurs is the place to find rare and sought-after French parfums: lily-of-the-valley fans will love Muguet du Bonheir, by Parfums Caron, while Jean-Charles Brousseau’s Bergamote is an elegant blend of jasmine, bitter orange and lavender.

Home

Those looking for a special piece of furniture should make a beeline for Collection Pierre, where designer Jean-Louis Deniot creates pieces inspired by the decorative arts, from ancient Egypt to the 21st century. Each article is produced in the family-run factory in Vosges in north-eastern France.

For something with a bit of history, A. Pash & Sons and Anthony Outred Antiques offer exquisite antique silver and fine French furniture, such as 19th-century Louis XVI revival console tables with white marble tops. After you’ve surrounded yourself with the best in French decorative arts, you can rest your weary head on fine French linen from L&B.
