Creative capital
London Design Week is back – get your design fix at Coote & Bernardi’s new shop on Pimlico Road
 |
London’s pre-eminent design celebration, London Design Week (LDW), takes over the city once again from 17 to 25 September. It showcases the diversity of world-class design talent and emerging new talents in London with events and exhibitions across the capital.
For your own little piece of the action, visit Pimlico Road’s collection of interior design, furniture, furnishings, art and antique shops. A roll call of the area’s retailers that are getting involved in LDW include Gordon Watson, Gauntlett Gallery, Jamb, Hemisphere, Howe and Anthony Outred Antiques, so pop down to their shops and find out how they’re celebrating the festival of design.
One shop that’s set to make a statement this year is that of the interior and architectural design practice Coote & Bernardi, which was founded in 2005. Owners Gabriel Bernardi and John Coote are the creative team behind the restoration and interior design of the nearby Thomas Cubitt pub and the Orange Public House and Hotel.
The decision to open Coote & Bernardi Furniture came from the two men’s longstanding passion for furniture design. They had been creating bespoke pieces for their projects, but wanted to make these available to the wider public, and Pimlico Road seemed like the obvious place to set up shop. "It’s becoming an iconic design destination and has fantastic one-off shops with some of the best antique buyers in the world," says Bernardi. "There’s a great community spirit on the road; our stores complement, rather than compete, with one another." He believes that Pimlico Road has been key to reinvigorating Belgravia’s art and design scene.
Opening the shop during LDW was a happy coincidence for Bernardi. "It was perfect timing for us because we’re huge fans of LDW," he says. "We believe that London has the best designers in the world, so it’s great to be a part of the celebration.
"The diversity of our designers is what makes London so special," he adds. "There is no defining British style – we’re continually experimenting and reinterpreting the classics." This is something that is echoed in the team’s two distinct lines: Coote & Co, a heritage line featuring hand-carved reproductions of museum quality, and Bernardi, a more contemporary line.
To find out what Coote and Bernardi are doing for their special tribute to London Design Week, you’ll have to visit the shop. Coote & Bernardi Furniture officially opens on 26 September.
