Learn how to make stunning Christmas flower designs at the Judith Blacklock Flower School

As the festive season approaches, our thoughts turn to hauling in the artificial Christmas tree and rummaging through the attic to find the boxes of dusty decorations. But why not learn how to create natural decorations to give your home real sparkle?

The Judith Blacklock Flower School is tucked away down a quiet cobbled mews off Belgrave Square. "I set up the school 12 years ago after I was offered these premises, which to me are the best in London," says Judith. "This is such a fantastic part of the world to be in – it’s very easy to keep abreast of trends in design because you’ve got the big shops down the road, you’ve got designer boutiques, great shop window displays, and the same themes go through all design. We all inspire each other."

Blacklock and her team of experts teach a range of courses to suit all tastes and timetables: classic and contemporary approaches; floristry business courses; Christmas, wedding and church flowers; and one-day Mother’s Day courses, complete with champagne and cupcakes. Whatever your skill level, there is something for everyone.

"Anybody in the world can learn how to do flowers successfully – I like to think I’ve never failed yet," says Judith, who has written 11 bestselling books on floral design and fashioned stunning blooms for many high-profile events and personalities. At the Chelsea Flower Show in May, Blacklock created the Queen’s bouquet for the third year running.

The most popular course by far is the two-week intensive business course, which is ideal for people who are looking for a quick change of career. "They’ve gone off and set up everything from market stalls to stalls in railway stations and designer shops," says Blacklock. "It always surprises me just how successful they are."

But for those simply looking for some Christmas inspiration, there are workshops for beginners on a range of festive decorating, from how to deck the halls – or mantelpiece – with the perfect Christmas garland to how to build a magnificent fragrant wreath. There also expert tips on making your creations last well into the new year. Classes are taught in small groups and students can relax with complimentary mince pies.

Whether you’re a magpie attracted to all things shiny, or prefer a chic, minimalist Christmas, your home will be the epitome of festive charm in no time.
