Discover Belgravia’s gastronomic delights…
Belgravia is well-known for its grand architecture, prestigious addresses, leafy squares and specialist stores - but what else does this vibrant estate have to offer? Perhaps less well known are the gastronomic credentials of the area; an impressive nine Michelin stars, with high-end fine dining complemented by an array of delicious delicatessens, indulgent chocolatiers and charming British pubs.
The recent London Restaurant Festival offered the perfect opportunity for Belgravia to celebrate its position as a foodie paradise. The ‘Culinary Safari’ and ‘Gourmet Odyssey Bus’ demonstrated the wonderful flavours of the area offering a chance for visitors to taste several delights in a single trip. Penny Watson, London Restaurant Festival organiser, commented that the festival was a "great opportunity to visit Belgravia’s incredible restaurants and food specialists to discover all kinds of gourmet delights there".
In Motcomb Street, fine dining is close at hand: with Michelin-starred Indian restaurant Amaya, London’s only Michelin starred Thai, Nahm, and Italian Michelin-starred Zafferano sit alongside newly opened Pétrus, the Jumeirah Lowndes hotel's relaxed Mimosa Bar, fabulous Mosimann’s and The Thomas Cubitt’s slightly more sophisticated sister, The Pantechnicon. Specialist food shops include award-winning chocolatier Rococo, Patisserie Valerie, Ottolenghi, the eminent Pierre Hermé, as well as Royal Warrant holders Waitrose Belgravia.
For the foodie on Elizabeth Street, specialist French baker Poilâne bakes its artisan bread freshly on the premises every day and TomTom stocks delicious freshly ground coffee and gourmand Cuban cigars to accompany it. The Thomas Cubitt, Oliveto and Baker & Spice provide further escape from the daily grind of high-fashion shopping.
The restaurants on Pimlico Road are exceptional too, from French Michelin-starred Rousillon, to menu-free Hunan with its authentic flow of spicy Chinese tapas. La Poule au Pot is frequently awarded the accolade of ‘London’s most romantic restaurant’. Recent openings include The Orange, set in the former Orange Brewery and lovingly restored to its former glory by the team behind The Thomas Cubitt and The Pantechnicon.
101 Pimlico Road, which opened earlier this year, serves British cuisine with hints of the Mediterranean by Head Chef Keith Goddard, who previously worked at the Tom Aikens Restaurant. For those with a sweet tooth, William Curley, the only chocolatier on the road is renowned for his inventive chocolate creations - and his dessert bar will satisfy any craving!
Many comment that despite its London location, Belgravia has a distinct village feel with the beautiful, tranquil environment providing a neighbourhood atmosphere perfect for grabbing a bite to eat or dining in style. So whether you are an acclaimed food critic or simply feeling a little peckish, Belgravia is certainly worth exploring.
