Kabul collection
Jewellery made by students in Afghanistan has gone on sale at Erickson Beamon on Elizabeth Street.
Owner Vicky Sarge travelled to Kabul in 2009 to teach students in the war-torn country how to make jewellery – and now she has provided them with a London platform for their work. Each student’s pieces will be available to buy in Erickson Beamon, with all profits going to the individual graduate and their future business.
Vicky taught at the Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture, which was set up in Kabul by the Turquoise Mountain foundation to teach traditional handicrafts including jewellery-making and gem-cutting.
In a previous interview with Belgravia Magazine, Vicky said the Afghan students were "just like kids from anywhere". However, one subject they would not talk about was the Taliban. "They don’t discuss anything," said Vicky. "Nobody wants to say something and get it wrong, and tomorrow this government implodes. It will take them a really long time to trust and relax."
